Drug dog training is a dog training discipline which teaches dogs to indentify and pinpoint the scent of narcotics or illegal drugs.

Dogs are commonly used for this procedure because of their excellent sense of smell, their intelligence and their ability to be trained and obey. Dog breeds that are commonly known for this task are German Shepherds, Rottweiler, Boxers and Labrador Retrievers.

Drug dog training is actually a much harder job compared to ordinary dog obedience training because before dogs are exposed to this training discipline they first have to go through numerous training disciplines such as obedience training, specialized obedience training, endurance training, agility training and selective aggressive training.

There are actually rumors circulating that a step in drug dog training is to actually drug the dogs to help them get addicted to the narcotics. Don’t worry. Rest assured that these rumors are false, senseless and without bounds.

Would you believe that a popular drug dog training method used consists of a white cloth or a white towel and a game of tug-of-war?

The first step to this drug dog training method is to simply play a game of tug of war with the dog using the white towel. At this stage, the towel is washed properly making it scentless.

After a few days of playing the game of tug of war with the dogs, the handler will then roll up a bag of some narcotics into the towel, take note that this procedure is only intended to leave the scent of a specific drug into the towel and not to feed or let the dog taste the drug itself.

Using this method the dog will then associate that the smell of drugs is the scent of his favorite toy. The white towel and dog will then play a game of hide and seek. Every time the dog finds the white towel he is then rewarded by praise and treats. This process is repeated until the dog masters all of the scent of drugs.

Drug dog training is actually a very challenging process and shouldn’t be treated as a joke. Drug dog handlers understand the importance of their dogs in the fight for illegal drugs and treat them with the love and respect that they deserve.
