Understanding and Resolving Dog Barking

One of the biggest pet peeves with dog owners is dog barking. It can be annoying and it can even result in them getting a fine if other people complain about it. There are many reasons why dogs do bark but that doesn’t mean you have to decide to just live with it. You do have to realize that barking is the form of verbal communication that these animals use.

Therefore you have to expect that it will take place from time to time. In many instances dog barking is the result of them communicating with each other. It could be to attract a mate or to let other dogs in the area know that they have already claimed the territory in that area. Sometimes dog barking is out of curiosity or out of boredom so they do so in order to gain your attention. If that is the case, make sure that they can replace the bad behavior with something more positive.

Dog barking can be a signal that something isn’t right. For example that there is an intruder in your yard. It can also signal that there is a something going on that another pet or family member needs your help. When you pay attention to the different types of barking your dog does you will understand what is a normal bark and what may warrant some type of emergency. It is just like understanding what the different cries of a baby mean for your child.

Most of the time though dog barking isn’t necessary and it is something you will want to stop. You don’t want to use harsh punishments but you do want to reward positive behaviors. Many owners will chain their dogs up when they are barking excessively. They make sure there is food and water within reach. Your dog will quickly get the connection that when they bark they loose their freedom to explore. You can do this with a kennel as well.

Training your dog to stop barking involves being in control. Using the words stop barking are very powerful. Should you be able to use them from the time your dog is a puppy he or she will learn very fast that such behavior won’t be tolerated. With this type of training though you do need to be very consistent. If you aren’t, your dog is going to continue barking. This will be do to confusion and a lack of understanding rather than them just not paying attention to you though.

Make sure that you praise your dog with words and even with treats should the barking stop when you command for it to. This can take some work to get to this point so be ready for it. Remain calm and use the same words in your phrase each time to prevent your dog from misunderstanding what you are telling it.

There are barking collars you can purchase that will trigger a spray of citronella when dog barking occurs. This process is one that works well because it can be activated even when you aren’t home. The citronella smell won’t harm your dog but they don’t care for it at all. It won’t take long for them to make the connection between their barking and being sprayed.
